ESPN.com has been counting down to tonight’s launch of the ‘NEW’ MNF on ESPN. Just to keep ESPN in check, the NFL scheduled a doubleheader for the night, pushing MNF off the usual 8:00 ET start time. The result, Game 1 kicking off at 7:00 ET, with folks on the West Coast still in the final hour of the work day.
The New Announcers
Lame, Lame, and “Good choice, but the constraints by the network will reel him in to Lame.” We’re talking Mike Tirico (him of extra-special announcer voice), Joe Theismann (He’ll put anyone to sleep), and Tony Kornheiser.
The Games tonight:
Minnesota at Washington
Portis may or may not play - if he does, he won’t be much of a factor. The Vikes have a new coach and a new attitude. Brad Johnson managed the team effectively post-Culpepper injury.
The 4.5 points at home pegs this as a ’skin favorite. I say, Vikes win straight up by a touch.
San Diego at Oakland
Oakland is still Oakland. Old with a split lockerroom and still on the board as a 3 point fave. The Raiders couldn’t stop LT last year and they haven’t done anything to change that. Stay classy San Diego. The Rivers (Phillip) run red with Raider blood in 14+ point blowout by the Chargers.
Frankly, I’m about footballed out this weekend and another 6+ hours just doesn’t sound like much fun. Considering I’ll watch 6-7 games a week and I’m already feeling that way about tonight’s games, it will be interesting to the see the network ratings for the games tonight - my bet is that tonight probably isn’t the night for a big, splashy entrance for ESPN.

Are you as confused as everyone else to why the line on the Super Bowl is stuck on 4 with the seemingly never-ending support of Pittsburgh?
From the tip line today, a cryptic message informing us of a rumor that Microsoft money is gaming the online books to put the squeeze on Vegas. The email went on to say that money is flowing in to the online books in favor of Seattle - so much so that the line is seeing tremendous support on both sides at Pittsburgh -4 and forcing Vegas books to keep the line in place despite the money rolling in on the Steelers.
Sounded fishy to us, but then later in the day we received a second email with roughly the same details and further info that a huge losing day by Vegas books, combined with a strong push by lobbyists would get the issue of online gambling in front of congress.
It still doesn’t make much sense to us, but stranger things have happened. And who knows maybe a bunch of Microsoft’ers just have faith in Paul Allen’s Seabirds and running the contrarian view.
We’d love to hear from anyone who has more information on this. Just hit the Tip Line (over there on the sidebar) or in the comments.
So like we said, that’s the rumor mill for Thursday, February 2, 2006.
February 2nd, 2006
After opening at a modest -3 Pittsburgh has been bet up to a -4 in most books with a sprinking of -4.5 showing up. Total is pegged at 47 and hanging pretty solid on the strip with a few online books pulling the hook at 47.5.
Heavy betting action will start flowing this weekend and we won’t be surprised to see the Steelers but up to a 5/5.5 by gameday.
And of course we’ll have our plays posted live next week.

Seattle stepped up big time last week and proved that league MVP Shaun Alexander doesn’t have to carry the load for the SeaBirds to win. Carolina, on the other hand, proved exactly what we said last week - in that of all the rematches, they had the best opportunity to learn from their mistakes - and rolled out of Chicago with a W.
The public has been all over Carolina, and that means we like Seattle. With Alexander back in the lineup, Seattle can’t be stopped.
We say: Take Seattle -3.5

Short and Sweet. Pittsburgh is playing their 3rd straight road-game in the playoffs and have a 6 game winning streak. But this is Denver, perfect at home, and Jake Plummer hasn’t reverted back to his old self - and we doubt he’ll do it today.
This game will be a defensive battle early, but Denver will break it open in the 3rd quarter when the Steeler’s D line gets worn out.
We say: Take Denver -3.

Saturday, 1/14/06
Seattle -9 v. Washington
O/U: 42
Denver -3 v. New England
O/U: 44
Sunday, 1/15/06
Indianapolis -8.5 v. Pittsburgh
O/U: 46.5
Chicago -3 v. Carolina
O/U: 31.5
The biggest moves thus far by the “Public” are on Indy which has already been bet up to -9.5/10 in most places.

And speaking of Monday Night Football, we’re on a 6-1 run on Monday Night since we started this site. That is free money baby.
New England is in the post-season dance, are banged up, and Belichick said they are treating this like a regular game. Okay, anyone else believe him?
Jets, there is nothing good to say about the Jets this year. Injuries pushed them to the curb and the extremely likable Herm Edwards is on the hot seat. However, this is a team that wants to make a statement and Bollinger is looking more comfortable each game.
New York won’t roll over for anyone and we like that.
Our green is going on the Jets +7, and that my friends, you can bank.

The misfits make their way to the Mile HIgh. Fitting I suppose, but Moss is still banged up and Lamont Jordan will be out of the lineup. Norv Turner has proven once again he can’t coach and the Raiders just plain suck in 2005.
Broncos? They lock up the AFC West with a win and should end up with a first round bye. Additionally, we think the offenseless Raiders will have trouble finding the redzone, let alone the end zone against the talented Denver D. A shutout is a strong possibility.
Take Denver -13

Psst, hey buddy. Want to make some money.
We’re perfect on Monday night (6-0 since we started), but this is just another dismal game like last week’s matchup. This may be Favre’s last Monday Night Game and we expect a bit of a show. Baltimore? blah.
Take Green Bay getting the 3/3.5 and tell everyone where you got your free money.

Revenge.
No need to spell it out any other way. Dallas was shell-shocked in the final 3 minutes in their previous contest this year, but until those last 3 minutes, they absolutely dominated the ’skins.
You can bet the Big Tuna won’t let the same thing happen.
Take Dallas +2.5. This game will be a straight-up Cowboy win and we wouldn’t be surprised by a blowout (sorry Gill).
P.S. It was a quiet week for us this week, but you may have noticed we won our 6th straight MNF wager, pushing us to 6-0 since we founded KingsOfVegas.com.
